Voiceovers on Tiktok: How to Use Them Effectively

Kevin Jusino

August 8, 2022

With over 1 billion users worldwide, TikTok has blossomed into one of the most exciting and compelling tools for marketers. Whether you’re managing a small mom-and-pop shop or leading an advertisement campaign for an international company, even just one 10-second clip could be enough to rake in millions of views.

But like most branding content, what you upload to the app still needs to be interesting enough to garner attention. Fortunately, TikTok has supplied users with diverse features to help make their videos stand out.

Of these, the Voiceover tool is one of the easiest ways to keep TikTok viewers engaged. With it, brands, users, and creators can narrate visual stories, sing along to their favorite song, or easily create instructional content. And thanks to additional voice modification effects (from baritone to chipmunk and beyond), the opportunities to enhance your video are endless.

Here’s a quick step-by-step guide to getting you adding Voiceover to your TikToks like a pro.

What is Voiceover on TikTok?

Voiceover is one of the main tools in TikTok’s editing suite, allowing users to insert recorded audio over their original video. It can be found alongside a few other popular options in the app’s drop-down menu on the right side of the screen (it’s the white microphone icon).

The concept is as straightforward as it gets: Users simply need to film a video as they normally would. Then, they can use the Voiceover function on the editing page to record additional audio that will play over the content.

Why add Voiceover to your TikTok videos?

We get it; creating content with as little effort as possible is tempting. However, by skipping the Voiceover feature, you could be missing out on thousands—if not millions—of additional views.

So, what makes this small-yet-mighty tool an essential aspect of your content strategy? Let’s review some of the most powerful reasons.

It enhances your content

We know that modern content marketing strategies rely on a few proven principles. Of these, producing informative, high-value content is most effective.

TikTok’s Voiceover feature isn’t the only solution for crafting rich content, but it is one of the best. Here’s an example of how you might use it to enhance your content through the power of storytelling.

Example #1: Using Voiceover to increase brand recognition:

  1. Your company is planning a special company retreat. The event is a great way to show off your workplace culture and perhaps discuss a service/product or two.

  1. You record a “mini-vlog” during the retreat for the company’s TikTok account. Don’t forget to capture all the highlights!

  1. Once you’ve acquired enough footage, you use Voiceover to add narration to the video. Talk about some behind-the-scenes secrets, how often the company plans similar events and other exciting facts that’ll have your audience eager to learn more.

It simplifies your strategy

Every business on the planet is searching for ways to streamline its marketing efforts. There's always room for improvement, from free content idea generators to automation tools.

But what happens when your audience still doesn’t understand your product or service after all this work?

This unfortunate reality is more common than you might think. After spending weeks, months, or even years perfecting your business model and products, it’s easy to forget that consumers don’t possess the same knowledge. Though your product or service could make perfect sense to you and your team, an everyday shopper might find it confusing and opt for a simpler alternative.

Now, this doesn’t mean you need to dumb down your strategy. You can continue creating innovative, boundary-pushing products and services that are unlike anything else on the market—but you still need to provide consumer resources. After all, why should they spend their hard-earned money on something too confusing to use?

Thankfully, this task is incredibly easy, thanks to digitalization. Instead of printing a 30-page instruction pamphlet, you can now record a series of 30-second TikTok tutorials that explain your product or service.

Example #2: Using Voiceover to explain your product:

  1. Let’s say you’re planning to launch a new social media platform in the vein of Facebook. But to start growing your user base, you’ll need to show people how to get their account set up.

  1. You screen-record a short video showing the process of creating a new account on your platform, keeping it concise and informative.

  1. Once your content is ready to go, you finalize it by using Voiceover to explain your actions. Talk about the most important steps, tips, tricks, and anything else viewers should know.

It sparks creativity

Most consumers have endured decades and decades of advertising. They’ve seen the same style of commercial, the same colors on highway billboards, and have grown used to the brief advertisements included in their social media feeds.

So, even if it seems like most people are staring at their phones all day, it’s harder to grab their attention than ever. Researchers found humans’ attention spans nearly halved in just 15 years.

The current rate? 8.25 seconds—just 0.75 seconds under that of a goldfish.

This doesn’t mean the end of marketing as we know it. After all, researchers are still trying to nail down why this figure is shifting so drastically. For all we know, it could be because so much content is already on the internet. Users could simply be more likely to scroll past a post they’ve seen or skip a video in favor of one of the hundreds of alternatives out there.

Either way, this discovery leaves us with one conclusion: Your content needs to be like nothing else they’ve seen before.

With dozens of creative effects and tools, TikTok is a near-perfect solution. Though Voiceover can yield great results when used for basic narration, it also opens the door for a thousand other ways to keep your content fresh.

Example #3: Using Voiceover to sing an advertising earworm:

  1. Imagine you’re gearing up for the launch of a new product. It’s the perfect option for a new content marketing campaign, but it still needs to stand out from the competition.

  1. With your own marketing team or help from a freelance musician, you develop a catchy tune that’ll ingrain itself into the minds of all who listen—think Subway’s “Five-dollar Footlong” or State Farm’s “Like a Good Neighbor”.

  1. Now, you use Voiceover to insert it into your next TikTok, highlighting the product’s release. If you combine this with other strategies, like a narration that ends with the tune, your videos will practically market themselves.

Now that you know why Voiceover offers so many possibilities for impressive content, you’re probably eager to open the app and start creating your own. However, we’ll need to do some quick preparation beforehand.

How to write a Voiceover script

TikTok has enjoyed so much success because of its focus on short-form content. Only recently did the platform start rolling out a feature that lets users record videos up to 10 minutes long, but even that seems like it’ll be a rare occurrence.

As the platform’s name suggests, TikToks are meant to be quick. They’re best when they’re as edited and concise as possible. Yours will need to follow the same standards for the best chance of success.

However, this can be tricky to do when it comes to using Voiceover. Without an outline to follow, you might be rambling on for two minutes in excitement for your product, losing viewers’ attention. Or, if you decide to improv, your information might come off as uninteresting or hard to understand.

This is where the trustworthy script comes into play.

Don’t worry, You don’t have to throw your marketing knowledge out of the window regarding TikTok. Writing a script for the platform isn’t much different from your conventional TV commercial or YouTube ad. All it takes is a few modifications to account for its short-form approach.

Not sure where to start? Follow these steps to write a great script for your TikTok.

Research your audience

Take some time to research the type of person you’re targeting, the kind of content they might connect with most, and other important factors. Don’t be afraid to see your competitors' approach to pinpoint which elements are already successful (and which ones have fallen short).

Know your purpose

Next, it’s time to think about what your actual content will look like. Will it be a short informational TikTok explaining a new feature on your website? A longer clip that covers some common FAQs from customers? Whatever it is, keep it in the forefront of your mind as you plan the rest of your video to ensure you stay on track.

Plan your footage

Your video content and Voiceover audio will need to work together to be effective. As such, it’s best to plan the footage you’re capturing in advance. You wouldn’t want to accidentally write the narration for a clip that’s not even in the video!

Write a first draft

With these foundational steps out of the way, you can finally start writing the actual script. How this looks will depend on your audience and purpose, but almost every solid TikTok should be able to answer “Yes” to the following questions.

  • Is it simple enough that your audience can understand it?
  • Is it as concise as possible without missing crucial information?
  • Is it different from similar content already on the platform?
  • Is your word choice engaging and powerful?
  • Does it contain a compelling call to action at the end?

Write a second draft (and maybe a third)

Now that you have something to work with, it’s time to start editing your draft perfectly. Even if your script is relatively short, it’s amazing how a few minor tweaks can take it to the next level.

Try putting your script aside for a few hours—or even a day—to come back to it with fresh eyes. In that time, you can also ask colleagues, friends, or family to read it and give you their opinion.

Just be careful not to drag out your editing process for too long. A creative TikTok with a minor flaw or two is better than one that never gets published!

Steps to add Voiceover to your TikToks

Alright, you now understand everything possible about the TikTok Voiceover feature. So, it’s time to finally put your knowledge to the test.

Though using Voiceover is incredibly easy, it’s worth reviewing the process to ensure you take full advantage of the tool. Without further ado, here is our step-by-step guide.

Step one: Open the TikTok app and record or upload your video

If you’ve done your preparation, you can use your script as a guideline to film footage or upload a pre-edited video. (You’ll find the record option at the bottom of your screen — the plus sign sandwiched between Friends and Inbox.)

Step two: Tap the Voiceover button and record your audio

Once you’ve recorded or uploaded footage, you’ll be taken to the first of two screens. This is TikTok’s main editing suite, where you’ll find diverse options to make your video unique.

The Voiceover button is a bit hidden, as you’ll need to expand the drop-down menu by clicking on the white down arrow. Voiceover is the second-to-last tool, placed underneath Voice effects and above Enhance

On the second screen, leave the white bar where it is if you want to start a Voiceover immediately, or tap-and-drag it to select a later starting point. Then, tap or long-press the button to start recording!

Note: Don’t forget to deselect Keep original sound on the bottom left if you only want your Voiceover audio in the video.

Step three: Review your recording

Make sure your recording is exactly how you want it before clicking Save. You’ll need to re-do the entire Voiceover if you decide to make changes afterward.

Step four: Add voice effects and other elements

It’s time to get creative! Try out the voice effects feature to turn yourself into a cat or chipmunk, use stickers to promote your brand’s logo, choose a filter to add visual interest, and anything else that catches your eye.

You’ll quickly realize there is a lot you can do with your video, but it’s still important to keep it neat. Just as it’s easy to write an overly-long script, it’s tempting to go overboard with effects and inadvertently overwhelm viewers.

Step five: Publish your video

Congratulations! You’ve done the hard work, and now it’s time to share it with the rest of the world.

But first, you’ll need to include a short description to accompany your video. Feel free to add any relevant hashtags, tag people mentioned in the video, and put a link to the products or services you talked about. As a final step, tap Select cover to choose the thumbnail users will see when they look at your account.

Press Post and watch the views start rolling in!

Conclusion
